Staten Island is New York City's most suburban borough and its least covered by the city's camera network relative to its size, but the cameras that do exist there show a genuinely different version of New York from anything visible in the other four boroughs. This is one of the most thoroughly camera-covered roads on Staten Island, and following the cameras from north to south shows the island's character changing from the more urban northern end near the ferry to the suburban southern sections near the coast.

Hylan Boulevard: The Island's Main Road
Hylan Boulevard is essential to understanding Staten Island by camera. As the island's primary north-south road along the eastern coast, it functions as the main commuter artery for the large residential population of southern and eastern Staten Island.

The Staten Island Ferry connects St. George on the island's northern tip to the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan, running 24 hours a day and carrying approximately 70,000 passengers per day. The ferry is free and is the primary transit connection for Staten Island residents who don't own cars.
