The FDR Drive is one of Manhattan's few true expressways. It runs along the east side of the island from the Battery at the southern tip up to roughly 125th Street in East Harlem, carrying traffic that has no practical alternative if you're trying to move quickly north or south along the Manhattan waterfront. When it backs up, it backs up badly, and knowing what conditions look like before you commit to it can save a significant amount of time.

The highway sits on a raised structure or below grade along most of its length, which means congestion doesn't clear to side streets. Once you're on it, you're on it. There are limited entrance and exit ramps, and missing one can mean a long correction.
Speed limits run higher than surface streets, which creates a particular kind of jam: fast-moving traffic that abruptly stops rather than the stop-and-go crawl you'd see on Queens Boulevard.

The highway runs along the waterfront in several stretches, and the cameras capture the East River behind the traffic. On clear days the views are genuinely good, with the opposite bank of the river (Queens waterfront, Brooklyn waterfront depending on the section) visible in the background. The camera image quality isn't broadcast-level, but the scene is distinct from the interior-of-the-borough camera views.
The FDR also has a particular late-night quality. After midnight the highway empties significantly, and the cameras show a long straight of empty lanes with the river on one side and the Manhattan bluff on the other. It's a different piece of the city than anything you'd see from a street-level camera in a dense neighborhood.

Rain events and winter storms hit the FDR harder than most of the city's roads because the highway's elevated sections offer no shelter and the approach ramps can ice quickly. During significant weather events the FDR cameras are among the most checked feeds on the Command Center. The combination of fast traffic design and limited exit options means poor conditions on the FDR create accidents that then shut down the road, and the live cameras show those situations in real time before radio traffic reports catch up.
