Times Square is covered by more cameras than almost any other intersection in the world. A portion of those are the NYCDOT traffic feeds that feed into the NYC Live Command Center. They're not the same as the tourist cameras mounted on hotel windows, and they're not the Times Square Alliance's official webcam. They're functional traffic monitoring equipment, and they show something closer to the real Times Square than any curated broadcast does.

During daylight hours the feeds are crowded with people. Times Square sees about 300,000 pedestrians per day on average, and the camera doesn't edit them out. You see tour groups stopped in the middle of the plaza, yellow taxis queuing for fares, delivery trucks double-parked in the bus lanes, and the steady stream of people moving in every direction without any particular coordination.

Several media outlets and tourism sites stream Times Square with a curated camera mounted to capture the big screens and the skyline. The NYCDOT feeds are pointed at the road and the intersection, not the billboards. They're shot from traffic poles and infrastructure mounts at roughly eye level or slightly above.

This means you see street-level Times Square, not the postcard version. You see the actual texture of it: the scaffolding that's always on at least one building, the mix of pedestrians who aren't paying attention to where they're walking, the way traffic actually moves (or doesn't) through one of the busiest intersections in the country.

Times Square

The square is surprisingly sparse at this hour. The overnight cleaning crews have cleared out. The tourists haven't arrived yet. You can actually see the pavement markings on Broadway, which are invisible by noon.

23:00: This is the hour most people think of when they imagine Times Square. The billboard screens are at full brightness, which doesn't show up well on traffic cameras, but the crowd is intense. Broadway show traffic adds a specific flow pattern: people streaming toward theater entrances around 7:30, then emptying back out around 10:30.

Stripped down to its infrastructure. Sanitation trucks, supply deliveries, a fraction of the foot traffic. The Times Square camera at this hour shows you the scaffolding and street furniture that's invisible during the day.

Midtown

Times Square.

Times Square

New Year's Eve is the obvious example. The ball drop is a Times Square Alliance production with its own camera crew, but the NYCDOT feeds around Times Square show something different: the perimeter. The blocked-off streets, the crowd containment, the police mobilization, the empty delivery zones. The hours leading up to midnight on December 31 are one of the most consistently watched periods on the Command Center's Times Square feeds.

Other dates that draw heavy live-camera attention include Thanksgiving (Macy's parade routes are covered by nearby feeds), major weather events, and the rare large-scale public events in Midtown that change traffic patterns across the whole area.

Times Square

In the NYC Live Command Center, filter by Midtown or search "Times Square" or "Broadway 42nd." Multiple camera pins will appear on the map. You can view them in grid mode across a few feeds simultaneously, or go seamless for a single larger view. The two-second refresh rate keeps the feed current without overloading bandwidth.
