Grand Central Terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue is one of the most visited buildings in the world, receiving approximately 21 million visitors per year. The terminal's main concourse — the great hall with the arched windows and the celestial ceiling map — is inside the building and not visible from the street cameras. But the terminal's presence defines the entire street-level experience around 42nd and Lexington.
The Lexington Avenue camera at 42nd Street shows the external pressure of Grand Central's traffic: the commuters arriving from the Metro-North Railroad and departing via the 4, 5, 6, and S (shuttle) trains, the pedestrians moving between the terminal and the surrounding office towers, and the constant vehicle and bus traffic on Lexington that the terminal's footprint compresses into the surrounding blocks.

The Chrysler Building stands on the southeast corner of 42nd and Lexington, visible in the camera frame as the stainless steel Art Deco tower that was briefly the world's tallest building when it was completed in 1930. This high station density makes Lexington Avenue one of the busiest pedestrian corridors in Manhattan — every block between 33rd and 86th Streets has a subway entrance within easy walking distance.
