The Pont Verrazano-Narrows connects Staten Island to Brooklyn across the Narrows, the water passage where Upper New York Bay meets Lower New York Bay. Why the Verrazano Is Different From NYC's Other Bridges

Every person traveling between Staten Island and the rest of New York either takes the Staten Island Ferry (which only reaches Lower Manhattan) or drives across the Verrazano. When the subway is disrupted on a line that crosses another bridge — say, the L train to the Williamsburg Bridge — commuters have the option of rerouting by subway.
