After the greenmarket closes and the retail traffic of the afternoon passes, Union Square at night has a different character. The square remains lit and occupied. The skateboarding community uses certain sections of the square's stairs and ledges in the evening. The chess tables on the square's northern edge see action through late evening. Food vendors operate on the surrounding streets.
The camera at night shows the reduction from the daytime crowd to a smaller but still-active population: people cutting through on their way from the subway to nearby restaurants and bars, people sitting on the square's steps, and the occasional performer who uses the space.
