The seven activity bars divide that population using a time-of-day behavioral model with nine distinct hourly windows: midnight–5 AM, 5–7 AM, 7–9 AM, 9 AM–noon, noon–2 PM, 2–5 PM, 5–7 PM, 7–10 PM, and 10 PM–midnight. Each window draws on three calibration sources: MTA hourly turnstile data drives the Commuting share, which peaks at 26.5% during the 7–9 AM subway rush and 27.7% during the 5–7 PM outbound surge; American Time Use Survey microdata for NYC metro workers anchors Sleeping (76% at midnight, under 1% at 5–7 PM), Working, and Eating distributions; and NYC DOT pedestrian counts combined with BLS Consumer Expenditure data inform Walking and Shopping. Shopping is held below 2.5% from midnight through 7 AM — when the overwhelming majority of NYC retail is closed and only 24-hour bodegas and pharmacies operate — rising to a peak of 13.2% in the 2–5 PM afternoon retail window. Every time window assigns a distinct percentage to each activity: no two behaviors share the same value within any block.
