Top of the Rock and the Building's Visual Context
30 Rockefeller Plaza rises 70 floors above the street, and its observation deck (Top of the Rock) is one of Manhattan's highest public viewpoints. The building is visible from street cameras throughout Midtown, and the Rockefeller Plaza cameras show its base and lobby entrance from street level.
The Art Deco design of the Rockefeller complex is still remarkable from street level. The Atlas statue at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue, the bas-relief sculptures on the building facades, and the channel garden between Fifth Avenue and the sunken plaza are all within the camera's coverage zone. Visitors who know what they're looking at can identify these elements in the feed.

Midtown Manhattan's lunch hour concentrates activity between noon and 2 p.m. The Rockefeller Center cameras during this window show the highest pedestrian density of the day, with workers from the surrounding office buildings mixing with tourist groups doing the standard Midtown circuit.

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve brings the highest annual volume of visitors to Rockefeller Center. The Christmas tree lighting ceremony in late November is attended by tens of thousands in person and draws enormous television audiences. In the days following the lighting, the Rockefeller Plaza cameras show near-constant crowd density from morning into evening as visitors come to see the illuminated tree.
