Columbus Circle sits at the southwestern corner of Central Park where Broadway, Eighth Avenue, Central Park South, and Central Park West all converge. It's the point where the Manhattan street grid crosses itself, creating one of the most geometrically complicated intersections in the city. Three NYCDOT camera feeds cover the circle and its approaches, and all three run continuously on the NYC Live Command Center.

Positioned looking at the southern approach to the circle along Eighth Avenue. This feed shows the vehicle flow coming up from Hell's Kitchen and the Theater District toward the park.
Columbus Circle is unusual in Manhattan because it's an actual roundabout, and the city has very few of these. Most Manhattan intersections are standard grids with traffic signals. The circle requires a different kind of driver behavior — yielding to traffic already in the circle — and the camera feeds show how this plays out in practice, which is with varying degrees of compliance depending on the time of day and level of congestion.
The monument at the center is a tall column topped with a statue of Christopher Columbus, installed in 1892. The surrounding fountain basin and the decorative elements at the base are visible in the camera feed, particularly at low-traffic times when the view isn't obscured by stopped vehicles.
The two glass towers on the northwest side of Columbus Circle (currently branded as the Deutsche Bank Center) are among the most prominent Midtown buildings at this scale. The towers contain CNN's New York studios, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Shops at Columbus Circle. The camera feeds show the base of these towers and the pedestrian concourse entrance on the circle level.
Columbus Circle functions as a gateway to the Lincoln Center performing arts campus, which is three blocks north on Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue. On evenings when Lincoln Center has major performances, the camera feeds at Columbus Circle show the increase in car service and rideshare traffic as attendees arrive and depart. The pattern is visible as a spike in drop-off activity at the circle rather than through-traffic movement.
Weekend afternoons produce the highest pedestrian density, particularly in summer when the park entrance draws visitors and the farmers market that operates in the plaza area on certain days adds commercial foot traffic. The camera shows the market's tent canopies visible at the park's edge.
One of the most photographed perspectives in Manhattan is the view looking north from Columbus Circle into the park, with the Manhattan skyline visible on both sides of the park's tree line and the towers of the Central Park West residential buildings framing the upper portion of the frame. The NYCDOT camera captures a ground-level version of this view, showing the park entrance and the first section of the park drive visible beyond the stone wall.
In fall, the tree color change that starts in the park is visible from the circle cameras before it's fully apparent in photographs or on the park's interior paths.
