Canal Street crosses Manhattan from the Holland Tunnel approach on the west to the Manhattan Bridge approach on the east, passing through six distinct neighborhoods in less than a mile and a half. The NYCDOT maintains cameras at multiple intersections along its length, and the NYC Live Command Center covers Canal Street from the Hudson River side to the bridge approaches, giving a continuous view of one of the city's most complex commercial corridors.

The central portion of Canal Street — roughly from Broadway east to the bridge approaches — runs through Manhattan's Chinatown, one of the largest Chinese-American enclaves in the Western Hemisphere. Chinatown covers approximately 40 blocks and is most densely concentrated along Canal Street, Mott Street, and the surrounding blocks.
Canal Street's open sidewalk vendors operate most heavily on weekends. The stretch of Canal between Broadway and the bridge approaches fills with additional mobile vendors selling a range of goods, and the pedestrian density on weekend afternoons in good weather exceeds what the camera shows on weekdays. Saturday afternoons in spring and summer produce some of the highest pedestrian densities visible in any commercial neighborhood in the outer boroughs or the non-Midtown parts of Manhattan.
Canal Street's Cross-Neighborhood Position
Canal Street is unusual because it functions simultaneously as a neighborhood commercial street, a regional through-route (carrying vehicles from the Holland Tunnel approach through to the Manhattan Bridge exit from Brooklyn), and a public market of sorts in its Chinatown sections.
The camera feeds at different points along Canal reflect these different functions within the same corridor. At the Greenwich Street end, the camera shows primarily vehicle traffic staging for the tunnel. At Chinatown's center, the camera shows a pedestrian-commercial environment that the vehicles are navigating through rather than flowing through freely.
Manhattan
At the eastern end of Canal Street, the bridge approach cameras show a piece of New York infrastructure that most people experience only from the subway — the B and D trains run on the Manhattan Bridge's outer tracks, and the views from the bridge over the East River are among the best visible from any subway line in the city.
