The Bowery runs from Chatham Square in lower Manhattan north to Cooper Square at 4th Street, where it connects to Third Avenue. Bowery @ Cooper Sq & 4 St: The northern end of the Bowery, at the intersection where it becomes Third Avenue. Cooper Square is the open plaza created by the meeting of Astor Place, the Bowery, and Fourth Avenue. The Cooper Union Foundation Building is on this corner. This camera shows the transition point between the East Village's southern edge and the Bowery's northern terminus.

The Bowery's history is one of the more dramatic transformations in New York street-level geography. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was New York's entertainment and vice district — a concentration of theaters, saloons, and lodging houses that gave the country the word "Bowery bum." By the mid-20th century it had become primarily known as the location of the city's wholesale restaurant supply trade and a lodging district for men without permanent addresses.
The camera feeds today show something different: the Bowery is now one of Manhattan's higher-rent commercial corridors, with luxury hotels, contemporary art galleries, and high-end restaurant groups clustered along its length. The New Museum of Contemporary Art at the corner of Prince and the Bowery opened in 2007 and anchored a cultural shift that transformed the northern stretch.
What the camera can't show is that the restaurant supply trade still exists on the southern end, with kitchen equipment stores visible in the camera's street-level context below 4th Street.
CBGB's Location
CBGB, the venue that effectively launched American punk rock with its 1974-2006 run at 315 Bowery, is visible in the camera frame at the Houston Street position. The address is now an upscale men's clothing store, but the exterior wall where the venue existed is still identifiable. The camera doesn't zoom to this level of detail, but the block is within the frame.
This is one of several Bowery landmarks visible in the camera feeds as street-level context rather than as the focus of the feed itself: the addresses of former venues, buildings, and institutions that defined the Bowery's various eras are in the camera frame but require knowing where to look.

The Delancey Street intersection with the Bowery is worth watching specifically during periods of Williamsburg Bridge traffic. Delancey feeds bridge-bound traffic from Manhattan and receives bridge-bound traffic from Brooklyn, and the volume at the Bowery crossing reflects bridge conditions 实时. Congestion on the bridge backs up to Delancey, and the Bowery camera captures the queue extending west from the bridge approach.

The Bowery functions as an informal western boundary for the Lower East Side and a transitional zone between several lower Manhattan neighborhoods. East of the Bowery is the Lower East Side. West of it is SoHo and Nolita. North of Houston it becomes the western edge of the East Village.
