Why the Verrazano Is Different From NYC's Other Bridges
Every bridge in the city has a different purpose and a different congestion profile. The Verrazano's situation is unique because Staten Island is the only borough with no subway connection to the rest of the city. Every person traveling between Staten Island and the rest of New York either takes the Staten Island Ferry (which only reaches Lower Manhattan) or drives across the Verrazano. This creates a structural dependency that produces consistent congestion without the alternative pressure-release valves that affect other crossings.
When the subway is disrupted on a line that crosses another bridge — say, the L train to the Williamsburg Bridge — commuters have the option of rerouting by subway. Staten Island residents commuting by car to Brooklyn or Manhattan have no subway alternative.
