The terminal's main concourse — the great hall with the arched windows and the celestial ceiling map — is inside the building and not visible from the street cameras. But the terminal's presence defines the entire street-level experience around 42nd and Lexington.
The Lexington Avenue camera at 42nd Street shows the external pressure of Grand Central's traffic: the commuters arriving from the Metro-North Railroad and departing via the 4, 5, 6, and S (shuttle) trains, the pedestrians moving between the terminal and the surrounding office towers, and the constant vehicle and bus traffic on Lexington that the terminal's footprint compresses into the surrounding blocks.
