Queens Boulevard runs about 10 miles through the center of Queens, from the Queens-Manhattan border near the 59th Street Bridge all the way out to Jamaica. For decades Queens Boulevard had a grim reputation among pedestrians because the road was designed for vehicle throughput in an era before pedestrian safety was a serious design consideration. It's 12 lanes wide at its widest point, with two sets of service roads running parallel to the main lanes, median islands in between, and light cycles that prioritize vehicle movement over crossing time. NYC DOT and community advocates worked for years to redesign intersections along the boulevard, and significant changes have been made. But the road remains complex and the camera feeds show that complexity clearly.
