Abordagem Lincoln Tun (aposta 9Ave e 10Ave) @ W31 ST: This camera covers the southernmost approach block where traffic queuing for the Lincoln Tunnel backs up from the tunnel entrance toward 31st Street. The feed shows the depth of any queue at the Manhattan toll plaza approach.
Abordagem Lincoln Tun (aposta 9Av e 10Av) @ W 33 St: The camera at 33rd Street shows the approach a block further back, giving a broader view of the queue length during peak periods. The position between Ninth and Tenth Avenues shows the westward flow of traffic from the Midtown street grid toward the tunnel entrance.
How the Lincoln Tunnel Works
The Lincoln Tunnel has three separate tubes under the Hudson, each approximately a mile and a half long. The center tube opened in 1937, the north tube in 1945, and the south tube in 1957. The tubes can carry traffic in either direction, and the Port Authority adjusts which tubes carry inbound versus outbound traffic based on the time of day and traffic conditions.
During morning rush, more tubes are dedicated to inbound traffic (New Jersey to Manhattan). During evening rush, more tubes carry outbound traffic. On Friday evenings and before major holidays, all available capacity shifts outbound. This reversibility is a significant advantage over many fixed-direction crossings.
Why This Approach Is Congestion-Prone
The Manhattan entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel is in the Hell's Kitchen / Clinton neighborhood, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues in the 30s and 40s. The street grid in this area is standard Manhattan — 60-foot-wide streets with two-way or one-way flow — feeding into a major regional connector that at peak periods carries over 120,000 vehicles per day.
The compression from city streets to tunnel entrance creates the backup visible on camera. There's no dedicated highway ramp structure leading to the Lincoln Tunnel the way there is at many suburban tunnel and bridge approaches. Vehicles queue in the surface street grid, which means the backup extends into city blocks and affects cross-street traffic as the queue grows.
Bus Trânsito at the Lincoln Tunnel

The camera at the Manhattan approach doesn't show the XBL effect directly, but the separate flow of bus traffic is visible in the feeds as a distinct movement pattern from the passenger vehicle queue.
Peak Times to Check the Camera

For inbound travel (New Jersey to Manhattan), the worst window is weekday mornings from 7 to 9:30 a.m. The camera shows the Manhattan-side conditions, which reflect cleared traffic from the inbound direction rather than the actual queue, but unusual congestion at the tunnel exit affects the surface streets captured by the camera.
The Hell's Kitchen Context
The Lincoln Tunnel approach runs through Hell's Kitchen (also called Clinton), a neighborhood that has transformed significantly since the 1990s. What was a working-class residential neighborhood with a significant crime rate in the 1970s and 80s is now a dense mix of residential buildings, restaurants, theaters, and the commercial activity that serves the convention and media industries based in this part of Midtown.
