Grand Central Terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue is one of the most visited buildings in the world, receiving approximately 21 million visitors per year. The terminal's main concourse — the great hall with the arched windows and the celestial ceiling map — is inside the building and not visible from the street cameras. But the terminal's presence defines the entire street-level experience around 42nd and Lexington.

The 4, 5, and 6 trains run under Lexington from the Bronx and the Financial District, and their stations are at 14th, 23rd, 28th, 33rd, 42nd, 51st, 59th, 68th, 77th, 86th, 96th, and 103rd Streets. This high station density makes Lexington Avenue one of the busiest pedestrian corridors in Manhattan — every block between 33rd and 86th Streets has a subway entrance within easy walking distance.
