The building's narrow prow faces north at this intersection, and the camera shows the approach from Fifth Avenue toward the building's tip. This is the angle from which the building's triangular shape is most visible.
Avenue du Parc @ 23 rue : Looking at the 23rd Street corridor from the east, this camera shows the block that includes Madison Square Park on the north side of 23rd Street and the commercial and residential buildings that form the Flatiron District's eastern edge.

Parc Madison Square
Madison Square Park occupies the block between 23rd and 26th Streets and Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue, directly north of the Flatiron Building. The park is managed by the Madison Square Park Conservancy and has been a consistent model for small-park programming in New York , it was one of the first parks to integrate a high-quality food kiosk (the original Shake Shack opened here in 2004 as a hot dog cart) and has a rotating sculpture program that places major contemporary art installations in the park on a seasonal basis.

The Flatiron District's Commercial Character
The neighborhood surrounding the Flatiron Building is officially called the Flatiron District and runs roughly from 14th Street to 29th Street between Sixth Avenue and Park Avenue South. The district developed its current character from the 1990s onward, when the buildings in this area that had served light manufacturing and warehouse functions converted to commercial offices for the technology, media, and advertising industries.
The camera feeds in this area show a neighborhood that functions primarily as a commercial and office district during weekdays, with a consistent daily rhythm of workers arriving by subway (N, R, W, F, M at 23rd Street on Broadway and Sixth Avenue; 4, 6 at 23rd Street on Park Avenue South), filling the streets for the lunch period, and departing in the late afternoon.

The Flatiron Building is covered in terra cotta glazed with limestone details, and it catches the late afternoon sun from the west in a way that makes it a popular photographic subject in the hours before sunset. The camera feed at 5th Ave and 23rd Street during the late afternoon (roughly 3 to 5 p.m. from October through February, later in summer) sometimes shows the building illuminated by direct western light when the surrounding buildings at the camera's level are already in shadow.
The building was closed and underwent renovation in the early 2020s. Its status and current use is visible in the street-level camera — the presence or absence of scaffolding, the activity around the entrance, and the window patterns are all visible indicators of the building's operational status.
