The Queensboro Bridge — more commonly called the 59th Street Bridge — connects Midtown Manhattan at 59th Street to Long Island City and the broader Queens road network. The bridge's traffic volume is consistently high, and checking the camera before committing to a crossing is practical for anyone driving in Midtown East or Long Island City.

One of the most famous views of the bridge is from below it on Roosevelt Island or from the Queens riverfront, showing the cantilevered steel structure rising from the East River. The NYCDOT cameras don't replicate this view, but the approach cameras at the Manhattan end show the bridge structure from street level, with the steel trusses visible above the roadway deck.
The bridge's architectural character is distinctive: it was built between 1901 and 1909 and features a cantilever design with a small two-level island stop in the center of the East River at Roosevelt Island. The island stop is visible from certain bridge-level camera positions.
The Simon & Garfunkel Connection
The 59th Street Bridge has entered American cultural memory partly through the Simon & Garfunkel song "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" from 1966. The song's casual, Sunday-morning tone matches the way many people experience the bridge as pedestrians or cyclists — the pedestrian and cyclist paths run along the sides of the lower level, and crossing the bridge on foot is a different experience from crossing it by car.
