DUMBO's waterfront location and skyline views make it a competitive choice for recruiting in a market where companies compete on office environment. The challenge is that real estate in DUMBO has tracked Manhattan pricing more closely than outer Brooklyn pricing, which means cost savings over Midtown Manhattan are smaller than they once were.

Bushwick und Ridgewood, Brooklyn: Small startups in creative technology, independent media, and consumer brands with a design focus have established presences here. The rents support early-stage companies that can't afford Flatiron or DUMBO. The community is less formally organized around tech than the Brooklyn Tech Triangle but active.
Harlem: Several venture funds and startup programs with a focus on underrepresented founders have established presences in Harlem. The commercial real estate is accessible for early-stage companies, and proximity to Columbia University's Morningside Heights campus produces a specific category of research-adjacent startup activity.
